Thus the main protagonists of Legend are long since dead and play little part in The King Beyond the Gate, other than passing mentions. Delving into the depths of human nature and the resilience of the human spirit, this haunting novel transports readers to a world where ancient stones hold both secrets and salvation, and a wise woman's knowledge is the key to survival in the face of unimaginable darkness. Modern day authors might have stretched this one book out to a trilogy and milked it for everything. Since 2016, he is permanently living in Tabiano Castle, one of his family’s historic estates which he cares for and manages.First edition hard back binding in publisher's original black covers, gilt title and author lettering to the spine. And once again, martial highlights are supported by equally effective magical elements and a cast of rugged, endearing characters which is if anything even more varied and memorable than the last time around (although no one quite reaches the archetypal level of Druss). The book is set in the same fictional world as Legend, that of the Drenai, but is not a sequel in the usual sense as the events of the two books take place around a century apart.

TKBtGate is not a better or worse novel than Legend, but it is complementary where it should be and supplemental where it can. Decado, who, leading the Thirty warrior monks, cannot fully gain their love and loyalty, even if he has their obedience? There is some skirting around why the grandfather doesn't get on with his daughter and the daughters sadness about being deserted by her husband. It still held my attention most of the time and made me care deeply in bursts, so I'll give it a mediocre three stars. This book is a sensitively told story of a boy named Dylan and his granddad, of friendship and family healing through granddad's fantastic stories (and plenty of Dylan's questions and internal reasoning)! There isn't even an explanation as to whether or not the magical place is real, which at least would have made the book more compelling and would have encouraged the reader to have a more optimistic view about death. The kind of character who fights and inspires until death, but till then, he keeps fighting and keeps inspiring.

The King Beyond the Gate is the second fantasy novel by Gemmell in his Drenai series, originally published in 1985 (a year after my birth, if that). I sort of held my breath to see if I'd like the book - I really like all the other content that author Daniel Kennedy has online, but I didn't want to set expectations too high, just in case. For serious SG-1 fans this is the only Stargate guide book you need … Without a doubt, this is the Stargate Bible. The writing is to the point, but very effective, and Gemmell’s action sequences are the stuff of Legend (ho ho). But he was still a decent man and he changed the fate of the Nadir by uniting all the tribes as one nation. Again the characters in this thrilling tale can be related to Romans, Mongols, Celts, Vikings, Templars, even a big South-African and several others are taking part, and these various tribes are wonderfully intertwined with each other to make this story one of absolute beauty.
