Description

The diary is not written in the classic forms of "Dear Diary" or as letters to oneself; Anne calls her diary "Kitty", so almost all of the letters are written to Kitty. Anne used the above-mentioned names for her annex-mates in the first volume, from 25 September 1942 until 13 November 1942, when the first notebook ends. [25] It is believed that these names were taken from characters found in a series of popular Dutch books written by Cissy van Marxveldt. [25] Curious facts abound in this book: who would have guessed that customers who ask about Bibles never actually buy them? Or that first editions aren’t usually that valuable? Or that a discussion of the net book agreement could be anything other than deadly dull? Bythell is a true believer, who makes a passionate case for the importance of books – real, paper-and-board books, yellowed by time and handled, smudged and annotated by generations. This is, after all, a man who shot a Kindle and wall-mounted it – and after reading his wonderfully entertaining book, I’m just about ready to follow suit. a b Frank, Anne (1997). The Diary of a Young Girl: The Definite Edition. Bantam Books. p.vii. ISBN 0553577123. Too bad the book industry is a dying commodity. I feel bad as I'm one of those people who do buy online (reading this from my kindle I'm sensing the irony) but I also regularly buy 2nd hand books whenever possible and it always gives me an absolute thrill surrounding myself in a world of books and I for one cannot leave without buying a book! I perish the thought of walking out without at least an armful of books. I think that makes me a true bookish person unlike those book poser imposters! *shudders* Frank, Anne, and Netherlands State Institute for War Documentation (2003) [1989]. This is clearly an individual who holds a genuine passion and appreciation for books, and seemingly puts up with a great amount of rudeness from his customers. What astounded me, is the way customers come in the shop, and attempt to haggle the price of the book! It's not a car boot sale, it is a successful business that Bythell has been running efficiently for over fifteen years! You’ll be amazed at how many customers try to haggle over prices. It’s a shop, not a rummage sale, for goodness’ sake! I can’t imagine ever having the cheek to offer less than the advertised price. I’m sorry; that’s not an image that should live in anyone’s head. But, it’s living in mine, so you WILL SHARE MY MISERY AND YOU WILL LIKE IT!

A cheerfully depressing account of independent bookselling today—deadpan, ruthless, poignant, and at times, so charming it’s almost unbelievable . . . surprisingly touching.” — QUARTZ Alba used to live a hectic life, working as a book publicist in Florence – a life that made her happy and led her to meet prominent international authors. And yet, she always felt like she was a woman on the run.

In 2009, the terror group Hezbollah called to ban the book in Lebanese schools, arguing that the text was an apology to Jews, Zionism and Israel. [69] In the 1960s, Otto Frank recalled his feelings when reading the diary for the first time, "For me, it was a revelation. There, was revealed a completely different Anne to the child that I had lost. I had no idea of the depths of her thoughts and feelings." In it, she wrote, 'In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart.'" In 1986 the Dutch Institute for War Documentation published the "Critical Edition" of the diary, containing comparisons from all known versions, both edited and unedited, discussion asserting the diary's authentication, and additional historical information relating to the family and the diary itself. [49] It also included sections of Anne's diaries which had previously been edited out, containing passages on her sexuality, references to touching her friend's breasts, and her thoughts on menstruation.
